Throwback Family Weekend Staycation – Village Hotel Katong

One of the best things about a Staycation is family time and exploring parts of Singapore that with tourist eyes! You see, when you live in the city for years, you tend to think yourself as a “content expert” and may miss out on little unknown facts or attractions the area has to offer. Recently, we had the chance to be a tourist in our very own Katong area, while having precious family time together in Village Hotel Katong.

The hotel is located in the culturally rich Katong, to the locals, we usually refer to it as where the old Paramount hotel used to be. The hotel had a unique Throwback Family Weekend which brought us closer to our (or rather my) Peranakan roots. Just have a look at what the hotel is like!

Spot the pretty tiles!

The Family room was large and spacious for our family of 5. (We had to ask for an extra bed for the boy cos the kicking just gets a bit too much now!) The space was important when the kids do their running around, hide and seek and the usual Eat-Sleep-Watch TV repeat!

Imagine how excited we were when the door bell rang and we had a most yummy Peranakan High Tea set delivered to the room, as part of the Throwback Family Weekend package. My favourite Nonya Kuehs with tea was a perfect pick-me-up on a Saturday afternoon!

Now, one huge plus to the large room was spending family time together. As part of the package, and part of the Peranakan culture of having close family times, Village Hotel Katong gave us fun traditional games (no Wifi needed!) to play with! We played good old family games that brought out much laughter, and competitive spirit!

The kids were quite surprised when we said, we are putting away our phones and not switching on the TV. And the entire family started the try out each game!

Snake & Ladders!

Pick Up Sticks on the Bed!

Our All-Time Favourite!

Check out the smiles!!

The next day, we started breakfast at the hotel’s Katong Kitchen. Buffet breakfast with lots of local twists! My favourite was the very very fragrant Nasi Lemak! Soft fluffy rice with a light tinge of coconut milk and good hot sambal chili!

After breakfast, it was time to explore Katong! Something interesting was the mobile phone that came with our room! The phone is pre-loaded with touristy information like attractions, good deals, where to eat etc, while it also had great data connection. I can imagine the tourists using this to research and make phone calls-all for free! But there’s more! The hotel prepared this for all guests! But not just the phone, we had a nice Live Like a Local booklet too!

The booklet is filled with eateries to try out (EAT), pubs to hop in (DRINK), Malls & recreation spots to check out (PLAY) and Culturally rich museums and places of worship to visit (LEARN). And everything is within walking distance to the hotel!

Here’s what we saw!

You can see we are all foodies! We checked out lots of classic and well known food haunts in the neighbourhood. And after that, we walked a bit to I12, then to Parkway Parade for some retail therapy!

This was one of the most Food-filling Family weekends ever! We played, we ate, we played and we ate! Thank you Village Hotel Katong! The Throwback Family weekend is a hit with us!
