One Great Love Story-West Side Story in S’pore now!

Everyone loves a love story. And when it is a tragic one, filled with star crossed lovers (yes, think Romeo & Juliet!) and cultural differences, you can imagine the great storyline! It is no wonder that West Side Story, a beautiful musical with that all encompassing love story is so well loved.

Described as “The No. 1 Greatest Musical of all Time” by the Times, and “The Greatest Broadway Production of all time” by Guardian, West Side Story is now here in Singapore! Did u know the movie version won 10 Oscars (including Best Picture!)?

Here’s the short gist: A boy and a girl fall in love, but each a part of teenage rival gangs in 1950s New York. Well, the rivalry goes back further…the two gangs are of two different ethnic backgrounds—Hispanic vs White. You can imagine the intensity of the conflict and the socio-economic issues that come to play!

The musical plays up the rivalry with a beautiful stage set, an unforgettable score and very vibrant dance choreography. (Actually, I really liked the dance scenes… it dramatizes the rivalry perfectly… esp with the high energy routines!)

Throughout the musical, we were enthralled with the plot twists and development. The wide vocal range brought out the depth of emotions in the two lovers. And I must repeat… the dance added lots of vibrancy to the characters!

It is no wonder West Side Story is such a hit. It has been on international tours for more than six decades and it’s been produced three times on Broadway and twice in West End. As an Arts student, I love love love the social element in the musical. It is amazing there’s so much to read into this love story!
